How to find and choose your coach

How to find and choose your coach

What to ask your potential coach before you start:

1. Specialisation – Choose based on your main goals. Career change, leadership, expat life, confidence, relationships, entrepreneurship – coaches often have focus areas.

2. Approach & Methodology – What coaching model or framework do they use? (e.g. Co-Active, ICF-aligned, somatic, solution-focused, etc.)

3. Education – What professional coaching training has the coach completed?

4. Certifications – Which recognised certifications and credentials does the coach hold?

5. Accreditation – Is the training programme (coach's education) has been accredited by a recognised body (e.g. International Coaching Federation)?

6. Experience – How many hours of coaching practice and how many years of experience do they have? How many years of any other related experience?

7. Client Profile – Who do they usually work with? Executives, creatives, expats, founders, students?

8. Results & Testimonials – Do they share anonymised client feedback or case studies?

9. Ethics & Code of Conduct – Is the coach bound by a professional code of ethics? Which organisation’s code do they follow? How do they handle confidentiality?

10. Supervision & Continuous Development – Do they invest in supervision, mentoring, or ongoing professional learning?

11. Coaching Style – Some coaches are direct and challenging, others are reflective and supportive. What suits you best?

12. Session Structure – Is there preparation? Homework? Reflection exercises between sessions?

13. Session Length – Sessions can be 30 / 45 / 55+ minutes. Find what works for you.

14. Remote vs. In-Person – 📍 Choose what suits you best (pricing may vary).

15. Availability – ⏳ Time zones, scheduling, and flexibility matter.

16. Price – 💰 Ask about session rates and package options during your sample session.

17. Contract & Cancellation Policy – Are expectations, boundaries, and rescheduling terms clearly explained?

18. Chemistry & Trust – 🤝 Coaching is a relationship. Work with someone you genuinely feel comfortable with.
